Collaborative Approach to Water Resiliency: Protecting our Headwaters

The Okanagan Nation Alliance is hosting its 5th Syilx (Okanagan) Water Forum on UN World Water Day, Friday, March 22nd, 2019.

This year's forum, entitled “Collaborative Approach to Water Resiliency: Protecting our Headwaters,” will demonstrate a Syilx cultural assessment of sc?axans nhithitw?l? (Upper Peachland watershed). The event will include a tour of the watershed with Syilx elders and knowledge holders who will share place names, protocols, and the Syilx natural laws regarding sc?axans nhithitw?l?. Attendees will also be joined by UBC Okanagan forest hydrology experts and other resource and water experts. There will be hands-on learning using both scientific and Syilx knowledge to assess the watershed, connect with each other out on the land and share perspectives. This will be followed by a hot lunch and then an opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue to find solutions to protect drinking water/water quality.

Registration is required.

Syilx/Okanagan members are asked to confirm attendance with Tessa Terbasket, ONA NR Research and Policy Coordinator, at [email protected].

WHEN: Friday, March 22, 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
WHERE: The tour begins and ends at the Peachland Community Centre, 4450 6 Street, Peachland, B.C.
TICKETS: $150 general admission, $50 non-profit/student. Seats are limited. Purchase tickets at https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/collaborative-approach-to-water-resiliency-protecting-our-headwaters-tickets-55183322804
